The 1990s were a time of big changes in technology, entertainment, and everyday life. Many surprising events from that decade are now forgotten. Here are five interesting facts from the 1990s.
1. Shopping Malls Started Disappearing
During the mid-1990s, shopping malls were being built all across the United States at a rapid pace, with around 140 new malls opening every year. However, many malls soon struggled because fewer people visited them. Empty and abandoned malls became more common, and by 2007, no new shopping malls were built in the United States for the first time in 50 years. This marked the beginning of the decline of traditional shopping malls.
2. The FBI Investigated the Wu-Tang Clan for Years
Starting in 1999, the FBI and the New York Police Department spent five years investigating the famous hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan. Authorities suspected the group of being connected to crimes such as drug trafficking, illegal weapons, and murder. Investigators tried to build a major criminal case, but after years of investigation, they found no evidence strong enough to charge the group. The case was officially closed in 2004.
3. A Jetpack Led to Murder and Kidnapping
In the early 1990s, three men created a working jetpack called the RB-2000. Although the invention successfully flew, disagreements over who owned it quickly turned serious. One of the inventors was murdered before a court hearing, and the crime was never solved. Later, another partner kidnapped one of the inventors to force him to reveal where the jetpack was hidden. The victim escaped after eight days, and the kidnapper was sent to prison.
4. The AIDS Cocktail Changed Millions of Lives
In 1995, doctors introduced a new treatment for HIV called the “AIDS cocktail.” Instead of using just one medicine, the treatment combined several drugs that attacked the virus in different ways. This made it much harder for HIV to become resistant to treatment. The new therapy greatly reduced the amount of virus in patients’ bodies, strengthened their immune systems, and helped millions of people live much longer and healthier lives.
5. South Africa Gave Up Its Nuclear Weapons
South Africa is the only country in history that built its own nuclear weapons and later chose to destroy them voluntarily. In 1989, the government decided to end its secret nuclear weapons program. By 1991, the country had joined the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and in 1994 international inspectors confirmed that all of its nuclear bombs had been dismantled. This decision remains one of the most unique events in nuclear history.
