When Edward I of England was returning from the Ninth Crusade in 1272, he received news that his father had died and that he had become the new King of England.
Rather than rushing home to be crowned, Edward chose to take a leisurely journey through Italy and France.
He spent nearly two years traveling before finally returning to England in 1274 to officially take the throne.
