An elderly couple who had been childhood sweethearts were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. They decided to return to the little park where they had first met.
They sat together on the same bench where they had spent many afternoons as young lovers.
The husband smiled.
“Do you remember the first time I told you I loved you?”
His wife smiled back.
“Of course I do. You were so nervous that you could barely get the words out.”
“And you said yes.”
“I did.”
They held hands and watched the children playing nearby.
After a few quiet moments, the husband whispered, “If I could do it all over again, I’d still choose you.”
His wife squeezed his hand.
“I’d choose you too.”
Then she noticed something in his pocket.
“What are you hiding?”
The husband pulled out a small box.
His wife gasped.
“After fifty years, are you finally giving me a diamond?”
He opened the box.
Inside was a tiny key.
She looked confused.
“What’s that?”
He smiled.
“It’s the key to our old house.”
She stared at him.
“But we sold that house twenty years ago!”
“I know,” he replied.
“Then what does the key open?”
The husband grinned.
“My heart.”
His wife rolled her eyes.
“After fifty years, you’re still using those terrible lines?”
He laughed.
“And you’re still listening to them.”
She smiled.
“Unfortunately, that’s true.”
They held hands and laughed together, just like they had fifty years earlier.
